Peach Cobbler was one of Papa’s favorite desserts. I think he liked peach cobbler on his birthday better than birthday cake. He was a pie man when it came to sweets (if you don’t count the years of his “eight o’clock feedings” of ice cream).
Papa had very definite ideas about food. Granny would say as soon as he was finished with one meal, he’d ask her what she was going to feed him for the next. He loved food. Papa talked about food, thought about food, ate food and always had a suggestion on how it could be made better. And he definitely thought you should eat and like everything the way he did. He knew that if you’d just try it, you’d like it as much as he did.
Papa was also a man of the Book. I don’t know of anyone who loved to talk about scripture as much as he did. When we went to visit them, no matter the occasion or time of day, he usually had a question for you. He wanted to discuss the Bible with anyone who would take the time.
He believed in prayer, too. As I was reminded by Kenny the other day, Papa prayed for all of us every day. He asked God to bless us and be with us and protect us. He prayed for Rodney’s safe return every time he went out of town. Even when Papa was forgetful and couldn’t remember how long Rodney had been gone, he still remembered to pray for his safe return.
What does all that have to do with Cobbler Pie? Nothing, except it was one of Papa’s favorites. He loved food, he loved God and he loved us. When you use Granny’s recipe for Cobbler Pie, especially Peach Cobbler, remember Papa loved you and prayed for you.
I love you Papa. We all do.
